Obama sex video? Hardly. It's spyware spreading via e-mail

Don't believe everything you read on the Internet: Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama isn't a terrorist...or a porn star.

A malicious spam e-mail is spreading that claims to have a link to a sex video of Obama but is instead spyware that steals sensitive data from the computer, security firm Sophos warned on Wednesday.

The subject line says "Obama sex video!!!" and the e-mail appears to come from "infonews@obama.com, Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, says on his blog.

Clicking on the link downloads an executable file that plays an amateur porn video, but Obama is not in it.

Meanwhile, behind the scenes a Trojan horse known as Mal/Hupig-D is installed. The Trojan targets Windows machines and steals passwords and bank account data, Cluley said.

Is it the work of the Republicans? Probably not; it has the trademark bad grammar and excessive punctuation of traditional phishing attempts, many of which originate outside English-speaking countries.

Thanks for getting the word out about a pretty bad virus! It is very sad so many people will be tricked into losing their passwords and bank account information to phishing!

One way some people can try to defend their computers (and bank accounts!) from Trojan horses is to pay attention to what anti virus protection their web hosting company can offer, if any. Once they find out how protected (or unprotected) their computer is, they can then decide to buy additional anti virus software that will filter out such phishing scams OR search for a web host or dedicated server that will offer such protection as part of their hosting services.

I have to laugh when I read this, as it makes me think of the Friends episode where Chandler clicks on a link to pictures of the sexy tennis play (can't think of here name right now) and puts a virus on Ross's computer and wipes his speech! There is a serious side though and always people out there ready to latch on to the latest thing to catch computer users out!

I run a blog at www.in-business.org and I quite often get spam comments on this - more recently these have been porn type spam and it a language other than English. I am not quite sure why they do this and whether it is virus related, as I know there are some really horrible viruses out there that can get into blogs and wipe all data! I could be wrong on this one though and I suppose it depends on the ISP you use
